We couldn’t be happier with our new home. My hubby and I decided when we got married that we wanted to look for a new home to start our lives together in. The truth is…I had a beautiful home in the city that I bought a few years before I even met my husband. That home was my everything…it was on the most perfect block in a great area and I was within walking distance of one of the top 10 restaurant rows in the country. I was a single gal in the city and I loved every minute of it. Here is a picture of my city home!
Of course this single gal in the city was also always on her hunt for her perfect forever love. When I met my husband (online…more on that one later) we instantly fell in love and honestly didn’t spend a day apart unless I was traveling for work. Once my then boyfriend moved into my home, it instantly felt too small. We made it work but we knew a new home would be in our future We looked at houses all around the Philadelphia area. We even looked for bigger homes in Philly. Our search was passive relying on a lot of trulia stalking, driving around to find open houses and homes for sale. It took us at least 6 months to realize that we wanted to get serious about our search and we found a great realtor who took over the responsibility of the searching like a great match-maker. We spent every weekend looking at homes and it took us a while to really settle down on our “must have” list:
- Move in ready
- Potential for a big kitchen
- Nice yard for future family/pets
- Closet space – something we were severely lacking at our city home
- at least 3 bedrooms
- Lots of natural light
- Close proximity to a train station for my traveling to work
We looked at so many homes. There were times we would spend an entire Saturday looking at 10 homes and would go home feeling so defeated. I will tell you that searching for a home is very similar to online dating. We would find these great homes online and based on the pictures we would get so excited and think that this was “THE ONE” only to get to the house and realize that the people who posted the pictures had VERY creative and talented picture-taking abilities. The homes would look nothing like the online pictures. Sounds a lot like some of the other online dates I went on before my now husband…eek!
One day when I was doing my daily search on Trulia I found this crazy looking, bright yellow home with red trim, and told my husband…this is the one. The house had exactly what we were looking for, except for the move-in ready part. We knew we would have quite a bit of work to do before we would move in, but we fell in love. When we visited the home for the first time I actually cried. I could have cried about all the mustard yellow in the home…the previous owners really loved yellow, but they were actually happy tears. I could somehow see our family in that home, see our future, and kids and dogs running in the beautiful back yard! To be honest, the house was everything we didnt know we needed….again just like online dating. Don’t judge a book…house…man by a picture! When the family accepted our offer, we got to work right away fixing up, painting, lots of renovation projects and making the home ours. I look forward to sharing our renovation projects along the way as we turn this mustard home into our OUR home!
